Brushing Baby Teeth

Have you ever wondered if, when, or how you should start brushing your baby's teeth?  The Doctor has your answer:

It's good to get children used to toothbrushes, so using a tooth brush even before they have teeth is a good idea. As soon as they start teething, their teeth will start to develop plaque, so run a clean, moist cloth (like a washcloth) over the teeth every day to remove the plaque. Once your child has teeth that touch, it's important that the parent brush them twice a day and floss them at least once a day. The surfaces between teeth that touch are much more prone to decay than the other surfaces. Children may want to brush or floss their own teeth, in these cases, Dr. Rubisch suggests that you allow them to brush their own teeth supplementally until they are coordinated enough to do a "good" job, usually between the ages of 8 and 10. Dr. Rubisch also strongly advises that parents buy a prescription grade fluoride supplement to use daily to strengthen teeth!
